About the Seaweed Initiative
The Seaweed Hub
The seaweed sector within Canada’s agriculture and agrifood industry offers many opportunities for Indigenous investment to meet growing demand in the conventional market for sea plant extractions, functional foods, and other end uses while balancing the goals of sustainable, climate smart agriculture. This project will result in a comprehensive strategy to establish a sustainable Indigenous seaweed industry in Canada. Canada has abundant supplies of seaweed species on all three coasts and a vastly underdeveloped industry.
As interest and momentum in this sector gains momentum globally, it will be important for Indigenous people in Canada to stake their own claim and identify the unique areas of the industry where they can secure a differentiated niche and a competitive advantage.
